Breeding Soundness of Bulls

چکیده

The importance of the bull in a cattle breeding program often is underestimated. A cow is responsible for half the genetic material in only one calf each year, while the bull is responsible for half the genetic material in 20 to 50 calves. The bull’s ability to locate cows in estrus and breed them is clearly vital to a successful breeding program. Bulls differ in physical appearance, fertility and sex drive (libido). In the past, when a cow failed to become pregnant it was assumed that she was at fault. Occasionally, that is true. However, a clear understanding of the male reproductive system and the differences between reproductive capabilities of bulls indicates that the cow is not always at fault.

Evaluating the Breeding Soundness of Beef Bulls

Evaluating breeding soundness of bulls is an often neglected management practice. Producers may incorrectly believe that bulls that have previously proven fertile are of sound breeding value for the rest of their lives. They may also assume that new bulls are reproductively sound simply because of some vague or implied guarantee by the seller. Unfortunately, neither assumption is correct. Bulls...

Breeding soundness evaluation of bulls by semen analysis, testicular fine needle aspiration cytology and trans-scrotal ultrasonography

The aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of trans-scrotal ultrasonography and testicular fine needle aspiration cytology in assessing bulls for breeding suitability. These two techniques were also compared with semen analysis. Bulls presented for breeding soundness evaluation were assessed using all three techniques. The findings of each technique were compared. There was agreement ...

Trans-scrotal Ultrasonography and Breeding Soundness Evaluation of Bulls in a Herd of Dairy and Beef Cattle with Poor Reproductive Performance

The present study was undertaken to determine the fertility soundness of unselected bulls used for breeding based on a standard breeding soundness evaluation technique (BSE) and trans-scrotal ultrasonography (TSU). A total of 8 bulls, with the mean age of 51⁄2 years (ranged from 31⁄2 8 years) and the mean weight of 651.5kg (ranged from 480-840 kg) were evaluated. Three bulls were Friesian Sahiw...

Fertility of yearling beef bulls during mating.

Crossbred (Bos taurus) yearling beef bulls were assessed for breeding soundness and physical traits prior to multi-sire natural mating at pasture. Bulls (n = 60) were assigned to six groups of nine or 10 bulls and two bull-groups were rotated on 14-day intervals during a 63-day mating season in each breeding herd (n = 3) of 191-196 cows. The remaining bulls (n = 14) were maintained under simila...
